The Mur i periudhës turke 1502 preserves part of Durrës’s city walls from the Ottoman period. These fortifications enclosed Durrës’s southeastern Kala quarter.

After the Ottoman conquest, the city adopted a smaller defensive enclosure measuring about 800 metres. Earlier Byzantine walls surrounded a much larger area.

Builders strengthened the Ottoman wall with towers, battlements called bedena, and two principal gates. The gates were the Great Gate and the Sea Gate.

A tower on the wall held the city clock, adding a visible civic feature to the defenses. Sections of the wall remain visible in Durrës.

The Ottoman enclosure focused on the part of the city known as Kala. Its construction changed Durrës’s urban layout.

The wall connects Durrës’s urban form with its layered history of Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman fortifications. Earlier defenses included works associated with Anastasius, Justinian, and later rulers.

The wall also relates to Durrës’s Venetian Tower, which incorporates an earlier Byzantine tower and older fortification blocks. Its towers and gates show changing defensive priorities.

The structure records how Durrës adapted to new political and military conditions. The name 1502 links this surviving site with the Ottoman period.
