Plaça Reial is a grand square in Barcelona’s Barri Gòtic, where three- and four-storey buildings surround an open space lined with royal palms. Neoclassical arches, shuttered windows and terracotta details frame restaurants, bars and nightclubs beneath the porticoes.

Francesc Daniel Molina i Casamajó designed the square in the nineteenth century after the Santa Madrona Capuchin convent was demolished in 1835. The cast-iron Fountain of the Three Graces now occupies the centre, replacing a planned equestrian statue of Ferdinand VII. Antoni Gaudí designed the two nearby lampposts, installed in 1879 with a winged helmet and dragon above them.

Three covered entrances lead inside, including the largest from La Rambla, while Liceu station on metro line three lies nearby. La Mercè brings open-air concerts in September, and the surrounding Gothic Quarter offers winding lanes, historic landmarks and lively cafés. Look up from the square’s terraces for palm trees and Gaudí’s distinctive lamps.
