The Pavelló alemany stands in Barcelona, Spain, as a modernist pavilion designed for the 1929 International Exposition. Its open spaces let marble, glass, water, and reflections shape the view.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich designed the building in 1928 to represent Weimar Germany through architecture. The building itself formed the exhibit. A steel-column grid, travertine plinth, red onyx, marble, tinted glass, and chrome-clad supports create its continuous sequence of spaces. Two pools reflect Alba, Georg Kolbe’s sculpture. The original temporary structure came down in early 1930, but Catalan architects reconstructed it on its original site in 1986.

Instead of directing you along a straight route, the walls guide movement through turns and changing widths. The roof appears to float. The Barcelona chair was designed specifically for this pavilion and remains associated with its interior. The Mies van der Rohe Foundation staged interventions. Those interventions have altered walls, filled pools, and removed glass doors temporarily. The smaller basin holds Alba.
