Palau Macaya stands in Barcelona as a modernist building designed by architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch for Romà Macaya i Gibert. The project began in 1898 and ended in 1901.

Its white stucco façade presents two taller towers, broad eaves, balconies, galleries, and a conopial entrance arch. A cyclist appears on a capital beside the main doorway.

Several artists shaped the building’s detail, including Joan Paradís i Figueres, Antoni Maria Gallissà, Marcel·lí Gelabert, and Manel Ballarín. Their work combines sgraffito, tiles, painted decoration, wrought iron, and sculpture across the exterior and interior.

The vestibule accommodates horses and carriages, while brick arches divide the entry space. A stone staircase in the courtyard carries floral and arabesque motifs.

The former family residence later housed an educational institute, a cultural centre, and the Science Museum before becoming CaixaForum Macaya in 2012. The building is recognised as a national monument and forms part of Barcelona’s modernist heritage.

Permanent exhibitions examine modernism, Puig i Cadafalch’s work, and the history of Palau Macaya itself.
