El Forjador is a bronze sculpture by Catalan artist Josep Llimona i Bruguera, created in 1916. It stands at the Escola Industrial, also known as the Escola del Treball. The figure represents a metalworker holding a hammer and chisel while wearing a work apron. Its raised, advanced leg gives the two-metre-six-centimetre figure a clear sense of movement. The sculpture measures 86 centimetres in both width and depth. Its marked musculature presents labour with dignity rather than heroic idealisation. Llimona shaped this robust worker through interests in labour, realism, modernism, Constantin Meunier, and Auguste Rodin. Meunier influenced the pose, while Rodin informed the expressive treatment of the body. A smaller worker version appeared in Brussels, followed by versions made for Barcelona’s 1929 exposition. Several stone and bronze replicas of El Forjador exist across Barcelona. This example belongs to the Diputació de Barcelona’s historical-artistic collection at an educational and industrial complex. The sculpture connects Llimona’s study of workers with Barcelona’s educational and industrial history.
