Wat Phra Chetuphon Vimolmangklararm Rajwaramahaviharn stands on Rattanakosin Island in Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon District, immediately south of the Grand Palace. Wat Pho’s northern compound opens around the bot and the temple housing the reclining Buddha. The forty-six-metre Buddha forms the clearest focal point among viharas, chedis, belfries, and Chinese statues. The southern compound contains monk residences and a school.

King Rama I rebuilt the complex over an earlier temple, making it his main temple and enshrining some ashes here. Rama III later expanded and extensively renovated the buildings. Four great chedis and ninety-one smaller chedis shape the architecture, while Phra Maha Chedi Si Rajakarn honours the first four Chakri kings. Traditional Thai massage is taught and practised within the grounds.

Granite slabs carry lessons in history, medicine, and literature, continuing an early public-education role recognised by UNESCO. The Phra Rabiang cloister gathers around four hundred Buddha images from different historical periods. Inside the Phra Ubosot, a gilded Buddha stands beneath a nine-tiered umbrella symbolising Thai authority.
