Johanneskirche stands in Seeburg, a district of Bad Urach, and anchors the Seeburg cemetery among old gravestones. The church was first mentioned in 770.

The present building preserves thirteenth-century elements, including its apse, choir east wall, Romanesque north window, and sacrament house. The nave dates from the year 1720.

Seccomalerei from around 1280 covers the apse, while choir frescoes show Christ as ruler of the world. Four evangelist symbols surround Christ: a winged man, lion, bull, and eagle.

A 1370 fresco presents John the Baptist’s story through scenes in the desert and at Herod’s banquet. The 1961 renovation removed the organ loft and added an altar and baptismal font by Susanne Müller-Diefenbach.

Hans-Dieter Ingenhoff restored the uncovered wall and vault paintings during that renovation. Wolf-Dieter Kohler designed abstract stained glass for the southern choir window.

Johann Viktor Gruol the Younger built the organ in 1853, and it was restored in 1980. The instrument has mechanical action for both keys and stops.
