Lech stands in Augsburg’s city centre as one of four life-sized bronze river gods surrounding the Augustus Fountain. The late Mannerist ensemble places Emperor Augustus above marble pillars, bronze herms and a broad basin.

Hubert Gerhard designed the fountain, while Peter Wagner handled the foundry work between 1589 and 1594. The other figures represent the Wertach, Singold and Brunnenbach, linking urban life with water for trade, industry and drinking supplies. Originally a running fountain, the structure also expressed abundance, civic wealth and Augsburg’s developing water management. The composition reflects Italian sculptural influence through figures positioned along the basin’s edge.

The basin and pillar were replaced with copies after Second World War damage. The original bronze figures now rest in the Maximilian Museum, while faithful replicas remain beside the fountain. Look for the spiral vines, spindle flowers and wrought-iron grid by Georg Scheff.
