Kraftwerk Riedinger is a hydropower plant in Augsburg’s old industrial district, beside the Senkelbach canal. Greenery and rushing water surround the two-story plastered building with its gabled roof. Senkelbach is the oldest canal linked to the Wertach, with use recorded since the late sixteenth century.

Built in 1904, the plant first supplied electricity to a machinery factory on the premises. Its role later widened, reflecting Augsburg’s change from water-powered workshops to industrial electrification. The current canal course dates from the late nineteenth century, while concrete replaced wooden walls early in the twentieth. The site forms part of Augsburg’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed water management system.

The hall contains yellow generator wheels that rise to head height beside a staircase showing two water levels. A 1923 Francis turbine and AEG generator remain alongside a Kaplan turbine and Kössler generator installed in 2007. Two inlets, a central sluice channel, a 6.2-metre drop and flow of 18 cubic metres per second define its operation. The original 1920s machinery is occasionally operated, though private ownership keeps the site closed to visitors.
