Fundamente St. Johann stands south of Augsburg Cathedral, where brick foundations preserve several layers of the city’s past. The remains belong to St Johannes der Täufer. The medieval church served the Dompfarrei and hosted baptisms, weddings, funeral masses, and celebrations for its patron saint. Archaeological excavations uncovered the foundations after the church was demolished and the cathedral square was levelled. Beneath the church, archaeologists found a Roman peristyle villa from the early second century. The villa included several rooms, a colonnaded courtyard, a bathhouse, and underfloor heating. Its position near the Via Claudia Augusta connects the structure with Roman urban life and regional travel. Early Christian buildings later occupied the area, including a chapel, a baptistery, and a reused Roman well. Today, double paving stones and marked outlines show both the medieval church and Roman villa within an open excavation area. Fundamente St. Johann records changing religious and civic uses in Augsburg’s city centre, from Roman settlement through the Middle Ages.
