In Antwerp, Rijn- en Binnenvaartmuseum floats at the Droogdokkensite, among former shipyards and other maritime heritage. Several preserved cargo vessels carry its focus onto the water. On board, original living quarters show how barge families lived and worked during the twentieth century. Cargo holds now contain photographs, ship models, technical plans, equipment and paintings.

Together, these spaces trace the social, cultural and economic life of inland navigation around Antwerp and the region. The sleepspits Mon Désir dates from 1913 and remains preserved. Liomar, a motorised spits from 1959, and Angèle, a motorkastje from 1923, add two later vessels. Volunteers rescued all three from scrapping in the 1970s. Without subsidies, they maintain the ships and keep their working heritage visible.

Stairs and narrow passageways lead through spaces that remain close to their original arrangement. Shipbuilding and navigation technology appear through the vessels themselves. West Hinder and M 477 Oudenaarde are among the other ships at the surrounding site.
