Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Boodschapkerk stands in Antwerp’s Luchtbal district, a garden suburb developed largely for harbour workers. Cream brick and a free-standing cube create a massive silhouette. René Van Steenbergen designed the current church, built between 1964 and 1967 after a smaller neo-Romanesque church stood here. The parish centre came first, with a theatre hall, party rooms, and café supporting local community life.

Reinforced concrete forms the structure, while blind east and west walls conceal a gently sloping copper roof. A southern bell tower rises above it. An eastern atrium leads to a monumental staircase and the main entrance on the upper floor. The lower level holds a weekday chapel for about 200 people, alongside a former library now used as a meeting room. The upper hall follows a long rectangular plan, reflecting pre-Second Vatican Council liturgical requirements. Its northern stained-glass wall measures about eleven by forty metres.

The church and parish centre belong to Luchtbal’s public infrastructure alongside schools, a cultural centre, a theatre, and a sports hall. The church forms part of the designated built heritage of the Luchtbal social housing district. Its main hall was designed for up to 1,200 people, while colourful glass walls fill the interior with changing light. A pyramid-shaped spire and cross complete the block-like tower on the southern side.
