Liebfrauenkathedrale, also called the Cathedral of Our Lady, is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Antwerp, Belgium. Its Gothic construction began in 1352 and lasted nearly 170 years.

Jan and Pieter Appelmans designed the building, whose completed north tower rises 123 metres above Antwerp. The unfinished second tower shapes its distinctive silhouette.

The belfry belongs to the Belfries of Belgium and France, a UNESCO World Heritage listing. Karolus, the tower’s largest bell, dates from 1507.

Inside, major works by Peter Paul Rubens include The Raising of the Cross and The Descent from the Cross. The cathedral floor contains gravestones linked with Antwerp families and churches.

The west portal features a statue of Saint Willibrord, a seventh-century missionary. Music also forms part of the cathedral’s history.

Its choir and musicians included Johannes Ockeghem and Jacob Obrecht during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Restoration reshaped the building between 1965 and 1993.

Baroque and Neo-Gothic elements record the cathedral’s long cycle of damage, alteration, and repair. The interior combines paintings, sculpture, bells, and memorial stones.

Liebfrauenkathedrale connects Antwerp’s religious history with Gothic architecture, Rubens’s art, and regional musical tradition.
