Het Letterenhuis in Antwerp brings Flemish literary and cultural heritage together in an archive and museum. You can see manuscripts, diaries, letters, notes, portraits, and artworks connected with writers, artists, and musicians.

The collection reaches back to 1750 and includes manuscripts by Hendrik Conscience, Willem Elsschot, and Tom Lanoye. Exhibitions trace two centuries of Flemish literature, showing how authors shaped ideas, developed texts, and met responses from critics and readers. Archives from Nederlands Kamertoneel and theatre director Walter Tillemans add more than fifty years of Antwerp theatre history.

Founded in 1933, the institution moved into its present building beside the original site in 1958. A specialist library holds thousands of Dutch-literature titles, while the ground-floor public space invites you to read and write. One detail stays with you: Flanders’ largest collection of cultural posters hangs alongside the literary archives.
