The Brouwershuis stands in Antwerp, Belgium, as a sixteenth-century building associated with water, beer, and urban planning. Gilbert van Schoonbeke designed it in 1554. An underground pipe brought water from the Herentalse Vaart, while a horse-powered mill lifted it into wooden tanks. Those reservoirs supplied water to about sixteen breweries. That arrangement supported Antwerp’s local brewing industry when beer had previously arrived by ship from Germany and England. Rupel water reached the city by boat.

In 1561, Antwerp bought the installation, and in 1582 the building became the brewers’ guild house. The guild then added its council room upstairs. Mechelen gold leather wallpaper, carved beams, and a marble fireplace with Ionic columns mark the interior. Mechanical pumps replaced the horse mill in 1856. Metal tanks replaced the wooden ones, and the hydraulic system continued operating until 1930. The museum reopened in 1961.

The protected monument records how a water facility supported breweries without ever becoming a brewery itself. The building received protected-monument status in 1942. In 2020, funding from the Flemish government supported further restoration work on the historic structure. One facade faces the former Brouwersvliet, now a boulevard. Henri de Braekeleer painted its interior in the late nineteenth century.
