Musée Picasso occupies the historic Château Grimaldi in Antibes, above foundations linked to the ancient Greek town of Antipolis. The late-fourteenth-century fortress overlooks the Mediterranean and carries layers of civic and royal history. Marc and Luc Grimaldi once lived here before the building became a governor’s residence, town hall, and barracks. Since 1928, the protected château has stood as a classified historical monument.

In 1946, Pablo Picasso worked inside the château for two months, creating paintings, drawings, and other works. He left paintings and drawings for Antibes, then added ceramics made at the Madoura studio in Vallauris. The museum became the Musée Picasso in 1966, while later donations expanded its modern-art holdings. Permanent galleries follow Picasso’s creative periods alongside works by Fernand Léger, Nicolas de Staël, Joan Miró, Germaine Richier, and many other artists.

The terrace places sculptures by Miró, Richier, Bernard Pagès, and Anne and Patrick Poirier against the Mediterranean setting. Restoration between 2006 and 2008 preserved the château, while wheelchair access and adapted facilities welcome visitors with different needs.
