Musée de l'Ecole in Antibes recreates a French primary-school classroom from earlier generations, with original desks and blackboards. Wooden schoolbags, maps of France, books, and classroom supplies fill the setting.

An exhibition about a century of schooling in Antibes, organised around 2000, inspired its creation in November 2004. Local families supplied class photographs, diplomas, ink pens, teacher smocks, and other objects. Documents, student work, testimonies, and Freinet-inspired teaching materials broaden the collection beyond furniture. A large display of Antibes class photographs sometimes reveals visitors’ relatives.

At the old desks, you can practise writing with a dip pen and violet ink. A nineteenth-century metal crown carries laurel and oak leaves. School rifles, an anti-dust watering can, merit crosses, and dunce caps add unusual details. Older visitors reconnect with school memories, while younger visitors encounter their grandparents’ classrooms. Volunteer-run activities include conferences, workshops, concerts, and poetry readings with local participants.
