Zuiderkerk stands on Zuiderkerkhof near Sint Antoniesbreestraat, among Amsterdam’s oldest neighbourhoods. Built between 1603 and 1611, this Protestant church was the city’s first designed specifically for Protestant services.

Hendrick de Keyser created a pseudo-basilica with a central nave, two lower aisles, Tuscan columns, timber barrel vaults and dormers. Clear glass replaced the original stained glass in the seventeenth century, filling the interior with light, while the tower gained its final form in 1614. Its square stone base rises to an octagonal sandstone section, free-standing corner columns and a lead-covered wooden spire.

Rembrandt’s three children lie buried here, and Ferdinand Bol was buried here in 1680. Claude Monet painted the tower with Groenburgwal in the foreground after visiting Amsterdam in 1874. Today, exhibitions cover housing, the environment and Amsterdam’s urban development, while the tower’s Hemony carillon, installed in 1656, remains a striking detail above the square.
