Westerkerk stands in central Amsterdam as a Reformed Protestant church built between 1620 and 1631. Hendrick de Keyser designed the Renaissance building, and his son Pieter completed it after his death. Measuring about 58 metres long and 29 metres wide, it presents a high central nave, two lower aisles and a plan shaped like two joined Greek crosses.

The church was among Amsterdam’s first buildings created specifically for Protestant worship, and remains the Netherlands’ largest church built for that purpose. Its 87-metre Westertoren rises above the city with the Imperial Crown of Austria on its spire, while a 51-bell carillon fills the tower. Inside, the Main Duyschot organ contains historic pipes, and Gerard de Lairesse’s painted panels show biblical scenes, musical instruments and the four evangelists.

Rembrandt was buried here in 1669, although his exact grave is unknown, and a memorial marks him on the north wall. Anne Frank listened to the Westertoren’s bells while hiding during the Second World War, and her statue stands outside. In 1966, Princess Beatrix married Prince Claus beneath the church’s Renaissance interior.
