Villa Betty stands in a garden in Amsterdam-West, between the Overtoom and Vondelpark, closer to the park than the street. The villa remains difficult to see from the street.

Peter Laarman designed the brick building for tobacco merchants Franciscus Antonius and Petrus Hermann Franciscus Smithuijsen in 1877. A natural-stone base supports the villa’s brick walls.

Its eclectic façade combines chalet-style and Jugendstil details with friezes, cornerstones, keystones, and distinctive brick patterns. A pond bridge and tennis court occupy the grounds.

Eduard Adolph Lehmann later reshaped the interior with Dutch, French, Arabic, Chinese, English, Empire, and Mechelen rooms. One ceiling decoration came from a Warmoesstraat business property.

The villa took its name from Clara Betty von Hunteln, who married Lehmann in 1900 and lived there until 1980. Artists Breitner, Israëls, and Mesdag visited the villa.

Cornelius Ubbo Ariëns Kappers later lived there, while Betty’s long residence made her a notable figure around the Overtoom. Villa Betty received national-monument status in 1995.

The designation recognized its architecture, varied interiors, cultural history, and garden setting near Vondelpark. The villa also appears as a filming location in Ate de Jong’s film Brandende liefde.
