The Rijksmuseumgebouw is the main building of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, completed in 1885 by architect P.J.H. Cuypers. Cuypers designed it for Dutch art and history.

Its architecture combines Gothic and Renaissance forms, giving the brick building a national character through historical Dutch references. Brick forms the building’s main material and defines its exterior.

The rectangular plan contains a central wing, two towers, eight towers overall, and a passage through the middle. The central passage separates the east and west sections.

High ceilings and a largely glass roof create spacious, naturally lit rooms for viewing the collection. A carillon occupies the left tower beside the main entrance.

Granite blocks from Belgium form the base, while limestone and sandstone shape sculptures and decorative details across the facades. Friezes display coats of arms from Dutch cities.

The roof carries statues representing Labour and Inspiration, alongside a statue of Victoria. Underground spaces beneath the courtyards include an auditorium and connections to storage areas.
