The Rijksacademie is an Amsterdam building created for the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, a visual-art education institute. Bastiaan de Greef designed it in 1874 and 1875. As Amsterdam’s city architect, he gave the building an eclectic design combining elements from different historical styles. Its original plan was symmetrical and set back from the street. Two bronze reliefs beside the entrance show The Artist and the Muse, Frits van Hall’s work from 1927. Gerrit Rietveld designed an exhibition space added between 1954 and 1958.

The Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten occupied the building until 1992, linking its rooms with advanced artistic study. De Ateliers then became the building’s post-academic art programme. That programme supports artists after their initial studies through two years of work with established artist tutors. King Willem III helped found the Rijksacademie in 1870. The building’s bronze, glass, staircase, conservatory, and later additions record changing needs within Dutch art education. Its public reliefs connect architecture with Amsterdam’s artistic heritage.
