Maranathakerk stands in Amsterdam-Zuid’s Rivierenbuurt, where its six-sided form meets several converging streets. Three nearly solid brick walls alternate with three broad sections of glass. Johan Hendrik Groenewegen and Hans Mieras shaped the church in the Reformed centraalbouw tradition. A tower is absent, while a tent-like roof gives the building its distinctive silhouette.

Planning began around 1938, but construction started on vacant land in 1954 and finished later that year. A commemorative stone marks the start of work on 25 September 1954. Before completion, services took place in a Geulstraat gymnasium and sometimes a nearby tram depot. The Dutch Reformed congregation worshipped here until 1998, followed by Saint Thomas of Aquinas parish from 1999 to 2014. Later, childcare and after-school care adapted the former church to another community use.

Inside, seating once faced away from the windows, creating a quieter focus beneath the brown-painted roof boards. Red tiles, grey-painted brickwork, wooden panels and cherry-wood furnishings defined the interior. Raymond Both’s Tree of Life mosaic still marks the north-eastern brick wall, added in summer 1956. Since 13 September 2011, Amsterdam has protected the building as a municipal monument.
