Homomonument stands beside Amsterdam’s Keizersgracht, near the historic Westerkerk, as a memorial to persecuted gay men and lesbians. Three pink granite triangles lie across the square and water’s edge. Together, they form a larger triangle measuring thirty-six metres on each side.

Designed by Karin Daan and opened in 1987, the memorial grew from Dutch gay-rights activism during the 1970s. Its three ten-metre triangles represent the past, present and future of LGBTQ history and struggle. One rises sixty centimetres above the pavement and serves as a stage, while another descends by steps towards a platform on the canal. The third remains level with the paving stones and carries a line from a poem by Jacob Israël de Haan.

The points connect this place with Dam Square, the COC headquarters and the Anne Frank House. A plaque in Dutch, English and French remembers people persecuted for homosexuality and calls for permanent vigilance. Each fourth of May, a ceremony honours LGBTQ victims of persecution, while rallies, exhibitions, lectures, weddings and celebrations bring community life to the site. The pink granite triangles hold the eye, but their directions across Amsterdam make memory feel present, future-facing and shared.
