Hollandsche Manege stands in Amsterdam beside Vondelpark, where a working riding school occupies a national monument. Its riding tradition reaches back to 1744 in the Netherlands. The neoclassical building dates from 1882 and draws inspiration from Vienna’s Spanish Riding School. Balustrades, cast-iron roofwork, parquet floors and an iron-and-glass hallway shape the interior.

The original school stood beside the Lijnbaansgracht and Leidsegracht canals before canal expansion led to its demolition in 1881. The replacement rose here the following year, during a period when Vondelpark attracted riders from across Amsterdam. Its foyer includes an orchestra gallery, while the stables, café and restaurant keep equestrian life visible inside. Restoration in 1986 preserved architectural details that have remained largely unchanged since the nineteenth century.

Riders still take lessons, lease horses and ponies, train with student clubs, and compete in dressage here. Since 2009, horses have also been led to the Koeienweide meadow in neighbouring Vondelpark. One memorable connection reaches back to 1766, when Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his sister Marianne performed upstairs in the former trainer’s house.
