Hoek van ’t IJ stands on Vuurtoreneiland in the IJmeer, about one kilometre east of Durgerdam in Amsterdam. You see an openwork, octagonal tower of cast iron and steel, rising nearly twenty metres above the island. Its white lantern room carries a copper dome, a gallery and a balustrade supported by consoles.

The present lighthouse dates from 1893 and replaced a square brick tower built around 1700 or 1701. That earlier light helped mark the route between the Wadden Sea and Amsterdam, alongside De Ven and Marken. A military post appeared on the island in the early nineteenth century, followed by a fortification in 1844 and inclusion in the Defense Line of Amsterdam in 1883. The island now forms part of the IJdoorn nature reserve, while the lighthouse remains an active navigational aid and a national monument.

The light sits eighteen metres above the water and shows white and red for three seconds, then disappears for two. Its white beam reaches about twenty-six kilometres, while the red beam reaches about twenty.
