Fo Guang Sha He Hua Temple stands in Amsterdam’s Chinatown as a Buddhist temple built in traditional Chinese palace style. Its name, He Hua, means “Lotus Flower” in Chinese. Completed in September 2000, the building holds the title of Europe’s largest Buddhist temple in this architectural style.

The project grew from local Chinese community plans to strengthen the neighbourhood during the 1990s. Architect Fred Greven developed its second design around a sacred Buddhist unit measuring 32 centimetres. That plan shapes a four-floor complex with worship halls, private quarters, a library, dining hall and exhibition space. Chinese granite stairs and balustrades meet Dutch side buildings along the Zeedijk, creating a visible meeting of architectural traditions. Dutch weather led to the replacement of the original Taiwanese roof tiles with yellow glazed Romanesque tiles.

Inside, statues of Kuan Yin, Wei Tuo and Qie-Lan occupy the two worship rooms. After ceremonies, the dining hall serves a free vegetarian meal. During Vesak, a procession carries Siddhartha Gautama’s statue from the temple to Nieuwmarkt.
