De Dolphijn is an Amsterdam canal house shaped by Dutch Renaissance design and the lives of influential residents. Architect Hendrick de Keyser the Elder built it for Spiegel. The house began as a residence for merchant and humanist Hendrik Laurenszoon Spiegel, who supported Dutch literary culture. Its red brick and sandstone bands create the striped façade called speklagen. The front has three levels, five bays, a central doorway, and twin stepped gables above. The Arion emblem explains the house’s dolphin name.

De Dolphijn spans two adjoining plots, an early arrangement shared by Amsterdam’s Bartolotti House and House with the Heads. Its original rear access reached the Herengracht. Volckert Overlander and Frans Banning Cocq later connected the house with Amsterdam’s civic and commercial history. Cocq also became the central figure in Rembrandt’s The Night Watch. The property later divided into De Vergulde Dolphijn and De Kleynde Dolphijn. Restoration brought back a gable, while the interior retains a vaulted stucco hallway and nineteenth-century fireplace. The façade preserves five bays and a central door. These details place De Dolphijn within Amsterdam’s architectural and social history.
