Bloemenmarkt floats along Amsterdam’s Singel canal, between Muntplein and Koningsplein in the southern canal belt. Converted barges form the shops, held steady above the water by supporting poles. From the canal side, ordinary storefronts conceal a market that visibly rests on Amsterdam’s historic waterways.

Founded in 1862, the market began when merchants brought countryside flowers into the city by boat. Fresh tulips once dominated the stalls, while bulbs, seeds, dried flowers and wooden blooms now fill much of the space. You can also find Dutch cheese, wooden or ceramic clogs, and souvenirs decorated with tulips. Spring and summer bring fresh tulips, geraniums and narcissus, while winter introduces Christmas trees and festive decorations.

The water, flower scents and city sounds create a lively scene beside the canal. Amsterdam’s former trading routes remain visible here, although trucks now deliver the flowers and other goods. A 2019 survey found that bulbs bought here rarely flower, a detail worth remembering before choosing bulbs for your garden.
