Agnietenkapel (UvA) stands beside the Oudezijds Voorburgwal canal in Amsterdam, on its historically quiet side. The Gothic chapel dates from 1470 and preserves pointed-arch windows, stained glass, and a wooden roof structure.

Built for the Franciscan Agnietenklooster, it survived the Protestant transition of 1578 when many Catholic religious buildings closed or disappeared. In 1631, the Athenaeum Illustre brought higher education here, with Gerardus Vossius and Caspar Barlaeus delivering early lectures in January 1632. The first-floor hall became Amsterdam’s oldest lecture hall, while the attic housed a city library that grew into the University Library of Amsterdam. Later uses included an arsenal, primary school, museum, and storage space, before restoration between 2004 and 2007 renewed the interior and covered the side alleys with glass.

University ceremonies, doctoral defences, lectures, and symposiums still take place here, and the former lecture hall serves as a conference centre. Look for the Renaissance gate moved here in 1921, with lion masks, diamond shapes, geometric patterns, and Amsterdam’s coat of arms.
