Kapelle Gschnaidt stands on a wooded hill between Kimratshofen and Frauenzell, within the Altusried area of the Allgäu. Two pilgrimage chapels form the centre of this secluded setting. The smaller chapel dates from the eighteenth century, while the larger neo-Gothic chapel was built in 1856 for increasing numbers of pilgrims.

Inside the larger chapel, a ribbed vault, nineteenth-century votive paintings and an old Gothic altar preserve its religious history. Several walking routes lead through the park-like Way of the Cross, beneath old trees and towards the forest. Behind the chapels, the Friedhof der Sterbekreuze holds about three thousand wooden death crosses, arranged along paths through the trees. The local Catholic tradition brought each cross here roughly a year after burial, preserving the memory of the deceased.

A nearby guesthouse adds food, a butcher shop, a beer garden and a bowling alley to the historic ensemble. One legend says horses carrying a hermit’s body refused to leave the hill, leading villagers to build the first chapel over his grave. An inscription inside the neo-Gothic chapel recalls mysterious symbols found in snow during March 1845, without human or animal tracks.
